DC has an antiquated sewer system and it is charging property owners to bring these systems up to the EPA’s current standard. The fees are calculated based on the amount of impervious surface (roof, parking lots, etc) a property has.
We are working with DC-DOEE and can help reduce your water bill by constructing a “green infrastructure” project on your property at no cost to you. These projects will capture and retain the rain water on your property, allowing it to soak into the ground. The more rain water that you retain, the more your water bill will be reduced.
This fee goes to DC Water to finance their Clean Rivers Project. This is a multi-billion dollar, 18 mile sewer tunnel project that is helping to prevent untreated sanitary sewage from being released into our rivers when there is a heavy rainfall.
The Stormwater Fee goes to DC Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) to finance their programs that divert stormwater (rain water) from the sewer lines that discharge directly into DC Rivers. This fee helps pay for the construction of “green infrastructure” projects.
Green Infrastructure (GI) refers to any type of construction projects that help retain storm water on a property, and prevent it from flowing into the sewers which, in turn, substantially mitigates the severe environmental harm of sewer overflows being released into DC’s rivers and streams during heavy rainstorms. GI Projects can include:
Our Green Infrastructure projects can make your property eligible for the following discounts:
We at Clean Rivers DC are here to help both the property owner and DC’s rivers. Share with us your DC water bill and we can show you how much money our green infrastructure projects will save you. There is no cost or obligation for you. If we determine your property is a worthy candidate for a green infrastructure project, we will:

Clean Rivers DC will fund the construction of a GI on your property, which in turn will generate Storm Water Management Credits. Clean Rivers DC will own these credits, and can be sold on the open market.
